PPP Day 15: Own It!

So, my blog adviser, (aka, my sister, Katy) and I had quite the conversation this evening about blogs, and bloggers, and the internet in general. And we came to this conclusion: the world would be a better place if people would just own their opinions! Rather than trying to justify their personal feelings with puffed up rhetoric and meaningless arguments, and tripe culled from "experts", they should just be willing to say, "This is how I feel, and that's okay!".

How does this apply to party planning? Maybe your personal motto is "Less is more." Great! Have a party without decorations-make it like the Grinch's Christmas- "It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags." You can do it! Just own that your philosophy is more about feelings and experiences than "things".

But maybe you are the type that feels like presentation is everything. You love complete coordination- from the invitations to the thank-you notes. It makes you happy to have everything be an exact match, and you are all about the little details. That's terrific! But you can't say its a bad choice to go with less, just own your love of more!

Maybe a party to you is decorations, favors, food, party games, and music. Great- commit to that based on your personal choice. Maybe a party to you is about friends, and you could care less about anything else-you could have a good time standing in line at Walmart and call that a party. Terrific! But it doesn't make you superior to "buy everything off Etsy" girl. Your choice is perfect-FOR YOU.

What I'm trying to say is this: if you are looking for someone to justify your choices and decisions, you need to reevaluate. This isn't like salvation- there are many roads to having a great party.  You can't expect the internet to validate you-you have much deeper issues than Pinterest envy if that is case. Maybe you should ask yourself why you can't be satisfied with your decisions without having to belittle others.

I know this seems a little angsty for a series about planning "Perfect Parties", but the truth of the matter is this: you need to find contentment in the choices that you make about these little things. There are many areas in life that are black and white (The Bible has all of those covered!) but parties-they are beautifully, mercifully, completely gray. You don't need justification, you don't need an expert. You just need to be content with the choices you make, knowing that whether you choose helium balloons or airblown, it is all good enough.

Stop trying to achieve someone else's perfect! It's relative to each person when it comes to party planning. What is an ideal, awesome, completely perfect party to me will not be for you. Dictionary.com has another definition for perfect (I used one of them here.):
"conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type"
You get to set the standard! You get to choose! You get to decide what the "description or definition is of -your- ideal type! How freeing is that? You don't have to be like anyone else. You can make choices for what you do, and don't do, and you can OWN IT! Yay! Once you get to a point where you don't base your choices on anyone else's you have gotten to a place where you can really have a perfect party, no matter what you do.

This is Day 15 of "31 Days of Perfect Party Planning". See the rest of the series here.
